As cloud computing concepts and solutions are becoming more and more prominent and accepted, the large departments of enterprise IT are facing either tremendous change or will disappear over time. Organization need to change in order to keep up with the fast growing digitalization and the accompanying explosion of Data. Experts predict since a while that Data are the next valuable currency. Cloud Computing is all over and those who get it right the first time will less struggle when the Service Driven Business takes on. In 5 to 10 years from now we will experience a complete different world where the lines between business and private blurs more and more. Apps and services of all kind will increasingly manage and organize our lifestyles – in business as in private lives.
What does that mean to enterprise IT – if they not rethink the way they support and offer their services they will not be able to deliver IT that supports their companies demands.
Think about current IT delivery as if a company has decided in the late 70s to buy cars for the mobility of their sales Forces. At the time of decision there might have been a handful of Sales person applicable. In order to ensure that the Sales people always reach their clients, the company started to build gas stations along the routes, according to the reach of the car adding some contingencies. In the following years the sales force increased – so the amount of company cars – as also the cars improved, among others also in terms of reach. The company had built many more gas stations along the increasing routes to customer, now they figured that they only need every other station. They had the brilliant idea to make those service center for spare parts and repair and let them to other service provider.
Now – today the company is facing that they operate way more gas station, maintenance areas and partner businesses than focussing on the original core business. The cost to operate all those system are consuming most of the operating profit, hence the need for change is obvious.
To start the Transformation there are 3 things to consider
– rethink the business model
am I still delivering the right Services/
Products ( or am I trapped in the
Gas Station business)
– re validate the service delivery
am I delivering the right services through
the right channels fast and agile
– reshape the organization
layout a roadmap to become an agile,
digital enterprise
