these days @ CeBIT / Hannover everybody talks about transformation, agility, composable …. of course all in context of Cloud Solutions. But what does “agility” really mean for the business.
1st of all being agile means being flexible in your thoughts and fast in your decisions. Flexible in thinking means to consider everything as subject to change and expect the unexpected.
Businesses feel the pressure to change more than ever these days. We – the consumer / customer are demanding services “on the go” well, with the maturity of the Internet this is not really new, but now it affects not only the customer facing part of the enterprise, it really hit the enterprises back bone.
IT departments felt so composable while they ITIL’ed every Service and now, as requirements change more often than Linda Evangelistsas’ hair color, they are under pressure.
Cloud computing is an answer but it is nothing if it doesn’t meet the challenging demands of a company transformation as whole. Becoming a “composable Business” requires a shift from vertical LoB ( Line of Business) thinking and acting to a collaborative, cross LoB Service delivery. Think about the early web days, when we started first online experiences with banking or the days when Amazon used to be an online book reseller. Those where the days of flat, siloed hierarchy service delivery. The web designers designed the websites, the sales and marketing departments defined the content and inventory was managed in most cases by the finance department. As the demand grew and the Internet gave us more capabilities, we added Enterprise Architectural capabilities and IT integration services. On a high level that used to be the way Online services were delivered.
A first major movement in delivery came with the increasing mobility and the shift from Cell- to Mobile phone. As we are no longer carry a phone on the go but a real computer in our pockets, the service demand has changed and therefore we are now changing the business. It’s not the one service we are looking for it’s more an integrated set of services, like we want to pre-order our favorite coffee in the nearby coffee shop and pay with the same app. For us a natural fit, for an enterprise that doesn’t follow the “agile concept” a hell of a burden as more and more of this services are required by us – the customers. And that doesn’t apply only for B2C( Business to Consumer) services it spans the whole range from B2B (Business to Business) from B2E (Business to Employee) it includes Supply and Delivery Chains as well as Partner and Channel systems. In a word it gies far beyond the enterprise boundaries and in that way businesses need to change and adapt.
How to do so? There’s no golden bullet or simple answer, but the sooner you start to transform the more agile you become in the way the Organisation gets structured the better you are positioned for the future.
